The hummingbird hawkmoth - Macroglossum stellatarum - is named for it's similarity to hummingbirds when they feed on the nectar of tubeshaped flowers. It can easily be seen in gardens, parks and meadows where it's preferred food plants like honeysuckle and red valerian grow. Macroglossum stellatarum has been seen as a lucky omen. These moths are in the family Sphingidae because their larvae were thought to resemble the Egyptian sphinx.
