Green-Brindled Crescent

The Green Brindled Crescent (Allophyes oxyacanthae) is a quietly beautiful autumn moth that seems to carry a fragment of orchard twilight on its wings. Its forewings shimmer with a soft olive green, flecked with rose and edged by a delicate cream crescent that glows like a tiny moon.
A subtle brindled pattern of olive and bronze runs through the rose and green, giving the moth a soft, mossy texture, as if it’s dressed in the colors of late-season hawthorn leaves. Found across Europe and parts of Asia, it flies from September to November, often on damp, chilly nights when most other moths have long vanished. The adults don’t feed at all; they exist only to mate, relying on energy stored since their caterpillar days munching apple, hawthorn, and blackthorn leaves.
Next time you’re in an old orchard on a crisp October evening, look for a small, jewel-like moth resting on a trunk. That flash of rose and emerald in the gloom is the Green Brindled Crescent, a living reminder that even as winter approaches, beauty still flickers in the dark.
