“Peach Blossom Moth” – Thyatira batis
A delicate nocturne in pastel and rose. This small, exquisite European moth wears wings the colour of dawn on peach petals: soft blush-pink fading to cream, sprinkled with chocolate-brown spots and wavy lines that look like brushstrokes on silk. When resting, it holds its wings roof-like, the pink underwing peeking out like a secret. On spring nights it flits through orchards and damp woodlands, sipping nectar from willow catkins and campions.
When the first frost threatens, each caterpillar digs a shallow grave in the damp earth, spins a cocoon of leaf-mulch and its own shed skin, and falls into a dream that lasts the whole winter. Then, on the first mild evening of the new June, the ground exhales. A pink petal lifts, trembles, and becomes a moth again.
One of the prettiest moths you’ll ever see at your window—proof that “moth” doesn’t have to mean drab. A tiny flying watercolour that truly lives up to its romantic name.
