Parnassius apollo wiskotti – The Scarlet Ghost of Gotland

High in the alpine meadows of Europe, where snowmelt carves rivers of crystal and wild sedums bloom like forgotten jewels, the Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo) dances as a symbol of fragile purity. But on the windswept Baltic isle of Gotland, a rarer phantom stirs: the wiskotti form, a mutation where the hindwings erupt in an extravagant scarlet stain. What begins as two modest red spots—the basal mark and forward eyespot—swells and merges into a single, blazing crimson field, bleeding across the pale, translucent canvas like spilled wine on marble. Black veins pulse through it, and translucent scales catch the northern light, turning the blaze to molten ruby.
