Nymphalis antiopa Original Watercolor Painting - Mourning Cloak Butterfly Art
The Mourning Cloak - an elegant Butterfly that waits for spring.
Original watercolor painting of Nymphalis antiopa.
NYMPHALIS ANTIOPA · THE SURVIVOR
The Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) is one of those butterflies that seems to combine elegance with extraordinary resilience.
Its deep, velvety wings are edged with a delicate pale border and small blue spots — almost like a fine piece of jewellery.
But beneath this elegant appearance is a remarkable survival strategy.
Unlike many butterflies, the Mourning Cloak can spend the cold season as an adult butterfly, emerging again when warmer conditions return. It is also a strong migrant in parts of Europe.
There is something beautiful about that idea:
A butterfly that waits through winter — and then returns to the air.
