Apatura ilia fine-art print - Lesser Purple Emperor butterfly watercolor print

45,00 - 85,00

A fine-art Print of Apatura ilia - printed as part of the first butterfly print drop.

THE SUBTLE BEAUTY · APATURA ILIA

The Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) is famous for the extraordinary violet-blue sheen of the male.
But this artwork depicts a female — whose beauty is much more understated.
Rather than relying on spectacular colour, this painting draws attention to the delicate patterns, textures and subtle tones of the butterfly.
The violett-blue iridescence here and there is itself a fascinating example of structural color: microscopic structures in the wing scales interact with light to create the shifting violet-blue effect.
A reminder that sometimes the most beautiful details are the ones you have to look closer for.

FINE-ART PRINT
Printed by me in my studio on Hahnemühle Museum Etching paper, selected for its beautiful tactile surface and ability to preserve the subtle details and colours of the original watercolor.
The texture of the paper gives the print a particularly lovely, art-like quality — something you can appreciate both from across the room and when looking closely.

PART OF A GROWING COLLECTION
The first three butterflies are:

Vanessa atalanta · The Traveller
Apatura ilia · The Subtle Beauty
Nymphalis antiopa · The Survivor

More species will gradually join the collection.
